An Interview with Art Marketing and Artist Career Development Expert, Caroll Michels
Author of, "How to Survive & Prosper as an Artist"
The interview is hosted by, Chris Farrell, of the PBS syndicated show, "Right on the Money".

Chris: So how important is it that the young artist understand the business side of their art?

Caroll: It’s very important, and unfortunately schools are not preparing students for real life, for the most part. It’s getting better, but it needs improvement. So many students, who are really thrown out after graduating without the wherewithal to know what to do, so many of them just immigrate to large cities such as New York and naïvely feel that once they arrive then everyone is going to discover them and all their worries are over. So it is very, very important that students have a business understanding.

Chris: So what are some common money mistakes artists make?

Caroll: The biggest one is … not willing to invest in yourself, where artists will invest in materials and tools and canvas and all of the equipment necessary, they’re reluctant to invest in their own careers in terms of marketing and business aspects. They’re reluctant to ask for help

Chris: But isn’t that one reason why people get into art, so they don’t have to sell and market and do all that stuff?

Caroll: It’s naïve, very, very naïve because it’s a very important facet of it. And I’m very devoted to helping artists learn how to manage their own careers because I see … a lot of problems when you ask other people to manage your career.

There’s a completely different agenda going on when someone else takes over, and it’s not necessarily in the best interests of an artist. So this is why I really believe that career management, self-career management is very important.
